Feeling Under the Weather?

Updated: Apr 4, 2019

It’s cold & flu season, and whether you get the occasional case or are more susceptible to getting multiple bouts, antibiotics are not always the answer.

The flu is caused by a virus, and the majority of upper respiratory illnesses are caused by viruses. Antibiotics work against bacteria, not viruses. The over- use and often unnecessary use of antibiotics has caused the problem of antibiotic resistance. When your body is under stress or your immune system is depressed, your body becomes vulnerable to infections. High dose IV vitamin C helps reduce the duration and symptoms of the cold and flu. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and is anti-inflammatory. It helps support the immune system and also plays a part in making serotonin and other neurotransmitters. But why IV vs oral? Because IV administration results in higher intracellular and plasma levels as compared to oral use. Even if oral mega doses are taken, most of it is excreted rather than absorbed. And mega doses can often cause stomach upset and diarrhea, especially if more than 5 grams are taken. However, 10-20 grams of IV vitamin C are routinely infused, and up to 100 grams can be done without any issues. Vitamin C is also crucial in the healing processes after surgery. It is essential for collagen production, along with zinc, to provide structural integrity to the skin. Vitamin C is used to treat depression, since it plays a role in neurotransmitter production, and is also used to treat fatigue, allergies and fibromyalgia.

Vitamin C is also part of Myer’s Cocktail. This is a powerful blend of minerals and vitamins that was developed in the 1970’s by physician John Myers. It is an IV concoction of vitamin C, magnesium, vitamins B5, B6, B12, B complex, and calcium (calcium is removed for hypercalcemic and certain cardiac patients). Myer’s cocktail is effective for cold/flu, fatigue, migraines, hypertension, neuropathy, depression, chronic infections, allergies, asthma, and athletic performance enhancement.

So, if this season you unfortunately succumb to the cold or flu, or have any of the aforementioned issues, consider IV vitamin C and IV Myer’s cocktail. Take the first step on your journey to better health.
